How to Calculate Beer Brewing Values

Formula

OG = 1 + (Grain × PPG × Efficiency) ÷ (Volume × 1000);
ABV = (OG − FG) × 131.25

Original gravity (OG) predicts the amount of fermentable sugar available. The difference between OG and final gravity (FG) determines the alcohol content.

IBU (International Bitterness Units) measures hop bitterness. A pale ale is typically 30-50 IBU while an IPA ranges from 40-70+.

Common use cases:

  • Homebrewing recipe design
  • Grain bill calculation
  • Hop bitterness targeting
