How to Calculate Coffee to Water Ratio

Formula

Water (mL) = Servings × 177;
Coffee (g) = Water ÷ Ratio

The golden ratio for coffee is 1:16 (1 gram of coffee per 16 grams of water) for standard drip brewing. Stronger brews use lower ratios like 1:15.

Different brewing methods have different ideal ratios: French press 1:15, pour-over 1:17, espresso 1:2, and cold brew 1:8.

Common use cases:

  • Daily coffee brewing
  • Dialing in pour-over ratios
  • Cold brew batch planning
