Rock Climbing Grading Systems
Formula
Different countries use different grading systems for rock climbing difficulty. The most common are YDS (Yosemite Decimal System) used in North America, French grades used in Europe, and the UIAA system.
Bouldering uses the V-scale (Hueco scale) or Font scale. Converting between systems helps climbers understand route difficulty when traveling or reading international guidebooks.
Common use cases:
- Converting grades when traveling internationally
- Understanding guidebook ratings
- Setting training goals across systems
