How Bowling Scoring Works

Formula

Open frame = sum of pins.
Spare = 10 + next roll.
Strike = 10 + next two rolls.
Maximum score = 300.

Bowling uses a unique scoring system where strikes and spares earn bonus points from subsequent rolls. A perfect game scores 300 points, achieved by rolling 12 consecutive strikes.

Each frame allows two rolls to knock down 10 pins. A strike (all 10 on the first roll) earns 10 plus the next two rolls. A spare (all 10 across two rolls) earns 10 plus the next roll.

Common use cases:

  • Keeping score during bowling games
  • Tracking performance improvement
  • League standing calculations
