Understanding Golf Handicap Index

Formula

Differential = (Score - Course Rating) * 113 / Slope Rating.
Handicap Index = average of best 8 differentials out of 20 * 0.96.

A golf handicap allows players of different skill levels to compete fairly. The handicap index is calculated from your best scoring differentials, adjusted for course difficulty.

The World Handicap System uses the best 8 of your last 20 scoring differentials, averaged and multiplied by 0.96, to produce your handicap index.

Common use cases:

  • Establishing an official golf handicap
  • Competing in handicap tournaments
  • Tracking skill improvement over time
