How to Scale Recipe Servings

Formula

Scale Factor = Desired ÷ Original;
New Amount = Original Amount × Scale Factor

Scaling servings works by computing a ratio between desired and original servings, then applying that ratio to every ingredient.

Round eggs to the nearest whole number. Convert awkward fractions to more practical measurements, such as 16 tablespoons to 1 cup.

Common use cases:

  • Potluck recipe scaling
  • Restaurant portion adjustment
  • Freezer batch cooking
