How to Calculate a Restaurant Tip

Formula

Standard tipping in the US is 15-20% of the pre-tax bill. For excellent service, 25% or more is appropriate. The tip is calculated on the subtotal before tax.

When splitting the bill, divide the total (including tip) by the number of diners for an equal per-person share.

Common use cases:

  • Restaurant bill calculation
  • Group dinner splitting
  • Service industry tip reference
