Estimate Kidney Function with Cockcroft-Gault

Formula

CrCl = [(140 - Age) x Weight(kg)] / [72 x Serum Creatinine(mg/dL)] x 0.85 if female

The Cockcroft-Gault equation estimates creatinine clearance (CrCl), a measure of kidney function used for drug dosing adjustments. It uses age, weight, sex, and serum creatinine level.

Normal CrCl is approximately 90-140 mL/min. Values below 60 mL/min suggest significant kidney impairment. Many medications require dose reductions when CrCl drops below certain thresholds.

Common use cases:

  • Drug dosing adjustments for kidney function
  • Monitoring kidney health over time
  • Clinical assessment of renal function
