Resistor Combinations: Series and Parallel

Formula

Parallel: R = 1 / (1/R1 + 1/R2);
Series: R = R1 + R2

Resistors in series add directly (R_total = R1 + R2), while parallel resistors combine as 1/R_total = 1/R1 + 1/R2. The parallel result is always less than the smallest individual resistor. These calculations are fundamental to circuit design.

Common use cases:

  • Circuit design and prototyping
  • Achieving non-standard resistance values
  • Load balancing in power circuits
