How to Use the Pythagorean Theorem

Formula

The Pythagorean theorem states that in a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of squares of the other two sides.

Given sides a and b, the hypotenuse c = sqrt(a² + b²). For a=3, b=4, c=5.

Common use cases:

  • Finding diagonal distances
  • Construction and carpentry measurements
  • Navigation and surveying
