How to Calculate Logarithms

Formula

A logarithm answers the question: to what power must the base be raised to produce a given number? For example, log10(100) = 2.

The change of base formula allows computing any logarithm: log_b(x) = ln(x) / ln(b).

Common use cases:

  • Measuring earthquake intensity on the Richter scale
  • Calculating pH levels in chemistry
  • Analyzing algorithmic complexity in computer science
