How to Convert Between Data Storage Units

Formula

Data storage units follow a binary hierarchy where each level is 1024 times the previous: 1 byte = 8 bits, 1 KiB = 1024 bytes, 1 MiB = 1024 KiB, and so on.

This converter shows values in binary (IEC) units which represent actual computing storage. Decimal prefixes (1 KB = 1000 bytes) are used by storage manufacturers.

Common use cases:

  • Comparing storage drive capacities
  • Planning cloud storage needs
  • Understanding file size differences between binary and decimal units
