Understanding Empirical and Molecular Formulas

Formula

An empirical formula shows the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms in a compound. It is determined from percent composition data by converting percentages to moles and finding the simplest ratio.

The molecular formula may be a whole-number multiple of the empirical formula. To find it, divide the known molar mass by the empirical formula mass to find the multiplication factor.

Common use cases:

  • Identifying unknown compounds
  • Combustion analysis problems
  • Analytical chemistry research
