Understanding Dog Age in Human Years

Formula

The old rule of multiplying a dog's age by 7 is inaccurate. Dogs mature much faster in their first two years — a 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 10-15 year old human. After age 2, aging rate varies by breed size.

Smaller breeds tend to live longer and age more slowly after maturity, while giant breeds age faster and have shorter lifespans. This calculator uses veterinary research to provide breed-size-adjusted age equivalents.

Common use cases:

  • Understanding your dog's life stage
  • Adjusting exercise and diet for age
  • Veterinary health planning
